1. Daryz — 13/8 (was 7/4)
Trainer: Francis-Henri Graffard. Jockey: Mickael Barzalona. Draw: 5. Age: 4. Weight: 59.5 kg.
Only three colts have won the Arc twice since the end of the Second World War, the most recent being Alleged in 1977 and 1978. Daryz is bidding to join that group. He again has a favourable pitch in stall five, but he is now the older horse giving weight to the three-year-olds. He remains the clear market leader.
2. Saddadd — 40/1 (was 40/1; 50/1 in places)
Trainer: Roger Varian. Jockey: Ray Dawson. Draw: 9. Age: 4.
Won a Group 1 in Germany last time, the same race Torquator Tasso took before his 2021 Arc upset, and that was his first run at a mile and a half. Further progress is possible, but the Eclipse at Sandown looked to expose his ceiling, and this is a much stronger assignment.
3. Chestnut Rocket — 200/1 (was 200/1; up to 250/1–300/1)
Trainer: Alicja Karkosa. Jockey: Marvin Grandin. Draw: 2. Age: 4.
Began in Poland before moving to Chantilly and has improved with each run for his current yard. A short-head second to Al Aasy in a Deauville Group 2 was a career best, but he still looks at least a stone short of what is required.
4. Admire Terra — 80/1 (was 50/1; up to 125/1)
Trainer: Yasuo Tomomichi. Jockey: Cristian Demuro. Draw: 12. Age: 5.
Finished a half-length behind the winner when third in the spring Tenno Sho in May, and was placed in the Japanese St Leger as a three-year-old. Still without a Group 1 win, and a double-figure draw leaves him plenty to find. He has drifted in the market.
5. Meisho Tabaru — 33/1 (was 40/1)
Trainer: Mamoru Ishibashi. Jockey: Yutaka Take. Draw: 13. Age: 5.
A twelfth Arc ride for Yutaka Take. The five-year-old is only the third horse in the 67-year history of the Takarazuka Kinen to win it in consecutive years. The ground should suit, but stall 13 is a serious obstacle. Slightly shorter than when the original notes were written.
6. Arrow Eagle — 125/1 (was 100/1; up to 150/1)
Trainer: Jean-Claude Rouget. Jockey: Ioritz Mendizabal. Draw: 14. Age: 5.
The final runner of Jean-Claude Rouget’s career. Rouget won the Arc with Ace Impact in 2023. The seasons since have been a struggle, and he was able to continue only after a court delayed the winding-up of his training business until Tuesday. He has eased in the betting.
7. Bay City Roller — 33/1 (unchanged)
Trainer: George Scott. Jockey: Oisin Murphy. Draw: 15. Age: 4.
Looked a useful Group 2 horse until he won a German Group 1 by seven lengths this time last year. Added the Coronation Cup at Epsom on Derby day, helped by rain-softened ground. An each-way candidate if the going stays on the soft side of good. Stall 15 is awkward.
8. Minnie Hauk — 22/1 (was 20/1)
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien. Jockey: William Buick. Draw: 10. Age: 4. Weight: 58 kg.
Favourite twelve months ago after three Group 1 wins, and led until Daryz collared her late. Kept in training for a return to Longchamp, but she has found it harder as a four-year-old, with no further Group 1 wins from four attempts. Marginally easier in the market.
9. Kalpana — 7/2 (was 6/1)
Trainer: Andrew Balding. Jockey: Colin Keane. Draw: 6. Age: 5. Weight: 58 kg.
A continuous improver. Her seventh behind Daryz last year is readily excused: she was caught wide from stall 10 and stayed on. She has progressed again and had Daryz six lengths back in third when winning the King George at Ascot in July. The principal market move of the week: she is now a clear second favourite from a good draw.
10. Friendly Soul — 22/1 (was 25/1)
Trainer: John and Thady Gosden. Jockey: James Doyle. Draw: 7. Age: 5. Weight: 58 kg.
Booked her place with a win in the Prix Vermeille in early September, which carried a free Arc supplementary. The Prix de l’Opéra remained an option until earlier in the week. The Vermeille is over the Arc trip, but she was gifted a soft lead and held the closers by only three-quarters of a length. Slightly shorter.
11. Varandir — 11/1 (was 12/1)
Trainer: Francis-Henri Graffard. Jockey: Clement Lecoeuvre. Draw: 4. Age: 3. Weight: 56.5 kg.
Less than half a length behind Maltese Cross in the Grand Prix de Paris, good enough only for fourth in a blanket finish — his only defeat. He had Benvenuto Cellini back in fifth when winning the Prix Niel by a length and a quarter. Graffard’s second string, and well drawn in four.
12. Benvenuto Cellini — 16/1 (was 14/1)
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien. Jockey: Ryan Moore. Draw: 1. Age: 3. Weight: 56.5 kg.
Officially a non-runner in the Derby after a stalls incident, then won the Irish Derby on quicker ground. Finished two lengths behind Kalpana in the King George, then a lacklustre fifth behind Varandir in the Prix Niel. Moore has chosen him from stall one ahead of Diamond Necklace in 16. A shade easier in the betting.
13. Bright Light — 125/1 (was 100/1)
Trainer: Andreas Suborics. Jockey: Benjamin Marie. Draw: 8. Age: 3.
Germany’s only runner. A third German Arc win in 16 years is remote: he has at least a stone to find on Maltese Cross and Daryz. He has drifted.
14. Maltese Cross — 7/1 (was 5/1; 15/2 in places)
Trainer: William Haggas. Jockey: Tom Marquand. Draw: 11. Age: 3. Weight: 56.5 kg.
Hated the ground and the draw in the Derby, yet finished second, running on best of all. Showed a high-class turn of foot to win the Grand Prix de Paris — over the Arc course and distance — then won the Great Voltigeur at York, with the Derby winner four lengths back. The main three-year-old colt, but he has eased from 5/1 and stall 11 is less helpful than the market leaders’ draws.
15. Thundering On — 8/1 (unchanged; 15/2 available)
Trainer: Joseph O’Brien. Jockey: Pierre-Charles Boudot. Draw: 3. Age: 3. Weight: 55 kg.
Produced one of the best Oaks-winning performances of this century at Epsom, cruising alongside Legacy Link and then powering nearly four lengths clear. Part of an outstanding campaign for her trainer. Well drawn in three, and a leading each-way price among the three-year-old fillies. Boudot won the Arc on Waldgeist in 2019.
16. Diamond Necklace — 12/1 (was 14/1; up to 18/1)
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien. Jockey: Christophe Soumillon. Draw: 16. Age: 3. Weight: 55 kg.
One of two three-year-old fillies. That cohort won four Arcs between 2008 and 2017, then drew a blank; only eight have lined up since, and three — including Minnie Hauk last year — finished second. She looked the Ballydoyle first string earlier in the week, but the widest draw of all saw Ryan Moore switch to Benvenuto Cellini. Best price has shortened to 12/1 despite stall 16.
