Lazer Wolf Favored in Small Field In The Opener At Limerick Racecourse

Lazer Wolf Favored in Small Field Limerick Racecourse Maiden Hurdle

A compact field of four runners lines up for the opening race at Limerick Racecourse this Sunday, March 24th, 2024. The Limerick Racecourse Maiden Hurdle, scheduled for 1:35 PM, will see these four-year-olds and upwards compete over a distance of two miles and fifty yards (2m 50y) on heavy turf.

Lazer Wolf (8/13) emerges as the clear favorite trained by G P Cromwell with jockey K M Donoghue in the saddle. This six-year-old gelding, despite remaining a maiden after eight hurdle runs, has shown promising form. His creditable second-place finish in a handicap hurdle at Naas just four weeks ago makes him the horse to beat.

Whimsy (11/10), trained by A McCann with jockey JP O’Sullivan riding, presents the main threat. This five-year-old mare has consistently placed in her hurdle races, most recently finishing second at Fairyhouse in February. With weight allowances in her favor, she could push Lazer Wolf for the win.

The remaining two runners, Mont Beuvray (40/1) and Who’s In Midfield (100/1), are considered longshots. Mont Beuvray has struggled in recent races, while Who’s In Midfield, a three-time maiden, fell in his last outing. However, in horse racing, anything can happen, and these horses could surprise.

The heavy ground conditions could be a factor in the race. Horses with experience running on similar surfaces may have an advantage.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the contenders:

  • Lazer Wolf (8/13): The favorite with recent good form.
  • Whimsy (11/10): Consistent performer with weight advantage.
  • Mont Beuvray (40/1): Out of form and an outsider.
  • Who’s In Midfield (100/1): Unproven horse with a tough task.

With a small field and contrasting form lines, this race is still open for debate. Will Lazer Wolf live up to his favoritism, or will Whimsy’s experience and weight allowance play a role?
